Exhaust Theory - Part 1
There are a lot of conflicting argument about header/extractor characteristic between 4-1 and 4-2-1. Most common thing that I usually hear is, "4-1 untuk pickup(torque), 4-2-1 plak untuk long(high rpm)". I'm not going to argue which is which, I just want to share what I think is the correct theory.
In my opinion, 4-2-1 is for low to mid rpm, which in general term pickup or torque, meanwhile 4-1 is for high rpm. Then you say "kalau cam tu kenapa kereta drag racing pakai 4-1, bukan ker diaorang nak pickup?" A drag cars operates at high RPM, it shift at 7000 RPM and above, every shift drop the RPM to 5000-6000 RPM, so that why drag cars use 4-1. If you look at track cars, they usually use 4-2-1 setup, why? this is because they need a low to mid RPM, they takes corners, go under braking, change from 5th gear to gear 3rd in 1 go, speeds goes down and within a second full throttle back to redline, all of this is a 4-2-1 characteristic.
